ORIGINS AND MANUFACTURING
Raw shea butter, the main ingredient of our products come from the south east of Mali. Shea du Mali has partnered with a cooperative of 35 villages with a total of one thousand members – mostly women – to produce the higher quality unrefined shea butter and help raise the living standards of women producers living in rural area through an ethically traded partnership. Local processing of the raw shea butter creates value added locally by allowing producers to increase their incomes and thus improve their living conditions. Its manufacturing is an activity taken on by women because the harvest and the extraction of the shea-tree are especially made by the women of the rural zones. Shea nuts are harvested between mid June and mid September.
Here are the steps used to produce all-natural, unrefined shea butter
.Pick up and pull out the fruit pulp. Boil the nuts.
.Rinse and dry the nuts under the sun.
.Break the nuts in order to shell them. Conserve the almonds.
.Wash the almonds in a mortar.
.Manually sort the almonds, keeping the best for the shea butter while using others for making soaps and cooking butter.
.Mechanically crush the almonds.
.Crush and roast almonds on a wood fire.
.Grind the roasted almonds.
.Cream with water to dilute the paste.
.Mechanically churn the mixture.
.Wash the emulsion.
.Cook the emulsion.
.Manually filter the butter using strainers (warm oil consistency).
.Wrap/pack the product in containers according to clients’ specifications.
